The Power of Pencil Puppies
Why are all of my pencils always gone?
My Middle School Pencil Problem Solved with Puppy Power!
You know the feeling. You walk into your classroom on Monday morning, brimming with lesson plans and fresh enthusiasm, only to be met with the age-old classroom mystery: the vanishing pencil. Pencils are like gold in these parts, disappearing faster than you can say "pop quiz."
Let me tell you about some magic! Yesterday, I started the day with six pencils. By lunchtime, it was the same six. Anyone who hasn't braved the trenches of middle school might not understand the depth of my joy at this point.
The secret inspiration? I saw a post in a Facebook group (because, let's face it, teachers share their secrets there) about a system using...wait for it...pictures of old people? Not quite my vibe. So, I decided to unleash the power of puppy cuteness!
Here's the magic:
Meet the Puppy Patrol: I armed myself with some adorable pictures of pups I created and named on Canva and attached each one to a pencil.
Pick Your Pup: When a student needs a pencil, they get to choose their favorite furry friend and sign him or her out for the period.
Puppy Comes Home: At the end of class, puppies are returned home to my desk.
Let me tell you, it's working wonders! My classroom is filled with talk of who gets which puppy today, and for the first time ever, all my pencils came back at the end of the day. (Maybe I jinxed it by mentioning that, but hey, I'm celebrating the small victories!)
Sure, it might be a bit silly, but sometimes a little fun goes a long way in the classroom. Plus, there's a hidden bonus: a gentle reminder to students to take care of supplies.
So, here's to the power of puppy pencils! They're keeping my sanity (and pencil stock) in check, and who knows, maybe they're even teaching a lesson about responsibility. All in a day's work for a middle school teacher, right?
